When Phones Stop Working

We’ve all experienced it: a severe weather event rolls through, a major accident blocks highways, or an unexpected emergency hits – and suddenly, your cell phone is useless. Cell towers get overloaded, networks crash, and staying informed and connected feels impossible.

How do you stay aware and stay safe when cell phones don’t work? We want to introduce you to a game-changing technology: Meshtastic.

What is Meshtastic?

Think of Meshtastic as a personal, text-based decentralized communication network. It’s a small radio device that uses a technology called mesh networking. Instead of relying on traditional cell towers, Meshtastic devices communicate directly with each other, relaying messages across a local area.

It’s like a secret club where everyone’s radios talk to each other directly, without needing the internet or cell towers. This means you can still text your family and friends even if there’s a storm or something happens to the cellular network.

How Does a Mesh Network Work?

Imagine a chain of people passing messages. That’s essentially how mesh networking works. Your Meshtastic radio sends a message to a nearby device, which then relays it to another, and so on, until it reaches its intended recipient.  This means that even if some devices are out of range of the sender or receiver, the message can still get through.

What if one person in the chain can’t hear the next? No problem! The message can “hop” to another person who can hear the next one in line. If one device can’t reach another directly, it uses the others nearby to relay the message. This means your message can get around obstacles like buildings, hills, or even dense forests! It’s like finding a different route around the wall.

Can Everyone See My Messages?

Meshtastic channels can be open to the public, or encrypted and private. Use public channels for situational awareness and news. Set up your own private encrypted channels with your family and friends. Using a Meshtastic device’s encrypted communication within a decentralized network, offers a greater degree of privacy and reduces the risk of communication being intercepted.

What are the Downsides?

Meshtastic is very good at sending secure, encrypted texts to people who also have a meshtastic device and are part of your local mesh. It is a closed-loop system.

It is not a long-range communicator. You cannot text your aunt in Atlanta, or your Aunt in Altus. The range of your messages depends on your local mesh.

Meshtastic is decentralized by design. This is a strength, but it also means there’s no central authority to manage or troubleshoot the network. Users need to be self-sufficient, and use the Meshtastic Discord server to solve your own issues.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a tech expert to use Meshtastic! The devices are surprisingly easy to set up and use. There are tons of online tutorials and a supportive community to help you along the way.

Get Started

There are dozens and dozens of Mesthtastic devices to choose from. We recommend the Lilygo T-Echo with built-in GPS as a great starter device. The batteries on ours last a week in standby mode and for several days when active on the mesh. It is easy to pair to your phone via Bluetooth and the Mestastic app.

If you want a Meshtastic device that “just works” this is the one.

  • Adapt to Meshtastic firmware
  • With BME280 temperature pressure sensor
  • T-Echo selects NRF52840 Advanced Bluetooth 5 as the multi protocol SoC for Thread and Zigbee

If you need help setting up your device, join the Meshtastic Discord server and search for the US Arkansas text channel. The experts there are always ready to help.

See you on the mesh!
